Katy city officials have engineered a tax assessment and collection system they say will save the city money while being more convenient for taxpayers.
According to officials, the city will dispense with its’ own tax department, letting Harris and Fort Bend counties do the work currently done by the city’s own tax assessor/collector.
The city encompass portions of Harris, Fort Bend and Waller counties. City Administrator Byron Hebert said Fort Bend County will collect taxes for Waller County, as well.
“Because of technology today, we can do this,” Hebert said. “We’re hoping to save about $150,000 a year and make it more convenient for taxpayers. Now they will have multiple places to pay their taxes.
“People will be able to write one check for everything, including KISD taxes,” Hebert added. “The plan is for us to start the new system in September.”
