Counties and municipalities in New Jersey can now apply for transportation infrastructure grants from the New Jersey Department of Transportation’s Local Freight Impact Fund.
The program aims to maintain and improve the state’s infrastructure by addressing the impacts of large freight on roads and bridges at the local level.
Applicants can choose from four categories related to local freight impact for project funding:
- Pavement Preservation: Improve pavement conditions where large trucks frequently travel
- Truck Safety and Mobility: Improve access for large trucks on county/municipal roads and bridges
- Bridge Preservation: Improve bridge conditions and ratings where large trucks frequently travel
- New Construction: Provide new, better ways for large trucks to travel through county and municipalities
Grant applicants must meet specific eligibility criteria to be considered for an award. Projects must:
- Be within the jurisdiction of the county or municipality of the applicant
- Provide access to a freight hub or destination, shown by a submitted map
- Have at least 5 percent large truck traffic, proven by a submitted traffic study
Grant recipients must award construction within 36 months of grant notification.
According to NJDOT’s Local Freight Impact Fund Handook, a 2016 legislative bill amended the 1984 New Jersey Transportation Trust Fund Authority Act of 1984 to enable the State’s Capital Transportation Program for 2018 through 2024 to include infrastructure investments for jurisdictions that connect to larger hubs.
