The Bureau of Justice Assistance awarded the County of Sacramento, Calif., a $750,000 Second Chance Technology-Based Career Training Program for Incarcerated Adults and Juveniles (Second Chance) grant to develop the municipality’s Automotive Technology Career Training Program .
With this opportunity, 110 moderate to high risk adult offenders can increase their chances of post-release employment in an automotive technology career. The program is focused on helping incarcerated offenders successfully re-enter the community.
Adults and juveniles will train during the six-to-36-month period before their release from prison, jail or a juvenile corrections facility. Then, they will connect with the county’s follow-up career services after release.
The Second Chance grants is a national program that supports training for tech-related jobs and transition planning. The following states and communities also received 2016 Second Chance technology training grants:
- New York State Department of Corrections and Community Super
- Minnesota Department of Corrections
- Essex County Sheriff’s Department in Massachusetts
- Arizona Department of Corrections
The Second Chance grants fund education, training, support and business community networking needs related to building or supporting recidivism tech career training programs.
