The FBI’s 10 Most Dangerous Cities, 2016

A look at the FBI data reveals which U.S. cities are the most dangerous for violence and property crime.

Editor's NoteAccess the latest FBI data (2017), which reveals the top 10 most dangerous cities for violence in each of the four U.S. regions.

Each year, the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting Program releases crime rates in the United States.

One of the datasets the FBI releases observes crime rates in U.S. cities with populations over 100,000. The data addresses violent crimes and property crimes, independently. Property crimes include burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson, or instances where there is no force or threat of force against the victims.

Editor’s Note: While Chicago had the highest murder rate in the 2016 data, the city does not make the top 10 most violent overall per 100,000 inhabitants, which is the measure for FBI’s 10 Most Dangerous Cities list in 2016. Newly released data for 2017 is being reviewed and an update of the list is imminent.
